It is very common that the cards that you have with the highest interest rate are those from department stores or retail stores. Those should be the first cards you stop using and start paying off. In order to clean up your credit you have to clean out your wallet. Cut up the cards you don’t need. Get them out of your wallet so you cannot even be tempted to use them.
Contact the customer service departments on cards that you have high balances on. If you have been a customer for a long time and you pay at least the minimum each month you should be able to work something out with them. No matter what they tell you, you have nothing to lose. The worst thing they can do for you is not to change anything. The last thing you can do is keep your old cards active. Do not charge a lot, but use it every once in a while. Old credit is good credit.
