You just got accepted to your dream university, are getting outfitted for living on your own. One of your main tasks will be finding the best  laptops for students. Both of these allow you to store info on their websites and sync it up with a folder on your computer. This can be a super effective way to backup all of your school projects so that if by some chance your laptop is damaged or stolen all your info is still available.

Adaptive intelligent recovery is a function on digital programmable thermostats that is also called smart response and smart recovery. It is a function that causes confusion amongst users of modern digital thermostats because the way these devices work is not properly understood.

There are two main purposes to a programmable thermostat – to reduce heating and cooling bills and to improve indoor comfort. Adaptive intelligent recovery is connected to both these objectives.

Smart response (as it is called on Honeywell thermostats) is designed to pre-heat or pre-cool a house so that the set point temperature is reached by the time a programmed period is due to start. On HVAC forums and other outlets on the internet for comment people complain that smart response seems a pointless function. This is not the case for those people who don’t like waking up to a cold house or those people who don’t like coming home from work to a hot and stuffy house.

The aim of having a programmable thermostat is to match the heating and cooling of a building with the movements of the inhabitants of a building. The idea is to have the heating/cooling come on when you awake, have it turn down when you go to work, have it turn up when you get back from work and then have it finally turn down again when you go to bed.

If you wake up at 7.30am then you can set the wake period to 7.30am. Adaptive intelligent recovery on a Honeywell thermostat will monitor the conditions in a house and decide how long it will take to reach your desired temperature and start the HVAC accordingly. Without smart response you would either have to wake up to an uncomfortable house or make a guess and set the wake time to 7.15am. Smart response relieves you of having to guess when to start the heating/cooling. It also slowly and efficiently heats or cools to make the set point temperature.

If you feel the house is too hard at 6am it is because you have your set point temperatures too high or the thermostat is faulty. It is not because there is something inherently wrong with adaptive intelligent recovery.

There is always the temptation with thermostats to turn them up to full heating or cooling if you get home and it is uncomfortable. The mistaken notion is that ‘full power’ will make the home comfortable quickly. It doesn’t; it just increases your period of discomfort and costs you extra money. Adaptive intelligent recovery is designed to stop such situations occurring.

The only complication with smart response or smart recovery is when a thermostat is regulating a heat pump. Heat pumps transfer heat from either inside to outside (cooling) or from outside to inside (heating). For the heating option on a heat pump the efficiency of the heat pump is dependent on the temperature outdoors. The colder it is outdoors the longer it takes for the heat pump to heat up indoors. The only way for a programmable thermostat to accurately account for this fact is if it is connected to an outdoor sensor or thermometer. The Honeywell Prestige HD is available with an outdoor monitor but costs over $400.

Most people just put a thermometer outside and change the set points to start the HVAC early to compensate for the slowness of a heat pump on very cold winter days.
