Caffeine is a common mood-altering substance found in coffee, tea, energy drinks, chocolate and many carbonated beverages. It acts as a stimulant to the central nervous system of the human body, creating a feeling of alertness and lessening drowsiness. Dependence on caffeine occurs because the chemical blocks the receptors for the neurotransmitter adenosine. After steady consumption of coffee or other caffeine laden foods, the body becomes adapted to the presence of the caffeine and begins overproducing receptors for adenosine. The body then becomes sensitive to adenosine because the presence of the caffeine prevents it from being properly transmitted in the nervous system.
Affects of adenosine sensitivity due to caffeine dependence results in a twofold issue: caffeine becomes less and less stimulative over time, and the consumer can experience withdrawal symptoms. If the habitual coffee drinker stops having his usual cup in the morning, the adenosine receptors become unblocked. Adenosine then floods the nervous system, which causes stomach pain, drowsiness, lethargy, and inability to focus, mild depression, and joint pain. Also, adenosine acts as a blood pressure regulator which causes blood vessels to dilate. If the coffee drinker stops consuming the caffeine and receptors are free to absorb adenosine, dilation of the blood vessels in the head will occur and lead to severe headaches and possible nausea. These symptoms peak after about fourty- eight hours and can last up to seven days. The coffee drinker will continue to experience caffeine withdrawal symptoms until the body's adenosine receptor numbers return to normal.
Consuming caffeine in moderation will ensure there is no caffeine dependence. Coffee drinkers should avoid making coffee the first beverage of the day so the body can become alert naturally. Caffeine also acts as an appetite suppressant, and can lead to dehydration. Replacing regular caffeine consumption with water will lessen the severity of withdrawal symptoms.
