We all know how terribly deadly smoking is. Ever since you were a young kid you should have learned that the habit is the leading cause of lung cancer. You probably even learned about other bad effects such as lots of wrinkles, various lung ailments, bad breathe, and yellow or brown teeth. You don’t even have to be a big smoker yourself to experience the bad effects of smoking. Second hand smoke can really hurt you even if you’re never touched a cigarette in your life. We’ve all seen the comparison between a healthy pinkish lung and a dull grey one affected by years of smoking. And chances are we’ve had a close relative or loved one who has been affected by the damaging effects of smoking, so is it okay to say it is common knowledge just how harmful smoking is for us? The answer is undeniably yes, and yet smoking is still associated with being very cool. Why is that the case in today’s world?

Perhaps it is the very fact that we know smoking is extremely damaging that gives it its “cool” reputation in the world. It is an activity done by the bad boy or the evil villain and those two characters whether in television or movies – are always cool. There is something about defying big health concerns that gives the appearance of bucking authority and throwing caution in the face of what is healthy for us as humans. Perhaps there is an inversely proportional relationship between how much we tell little kids not to smoke and how much it will be perceived as something that a cool rebel would do regularly.

This is not to say that Hollywood movies are free from responsibility entirely. No matter what we feel about the dubious act, there is no doubt the heightened portrayal in movies has added to smoking’s reputation as a cool act done by heroes and villains alike in all types of situations and lifestyles. At its worse, movies and Television might be the tipping edge to convince children to start smoking. We can only hope the current trends plays themselves out since once addicted, the prospect of how to stop smoking is so difficult. Ironically, after all this time our serious efforts to make smoking seem dangerous has actually succeeded – and it has aided in fostering the cool rebel image. Can one exist at all without the other? If the answer is no then the problem may never be solved and that would be a tragic thing.
