Should you choose a swivel chair with or without arms?

If you work in an office then you will no doubt spend a lot of time sitting down in a chair. The type of chair that you sit is very important to your health and your comfort. You may not get a choice as to what type of chair you have to sit in all day but if you do there are some important decisions to be made.

Typically one question that people ask themselves when looking is should I get an office swivel chair that has arm rests or not? The subject of armrests is an interesting one as it raises not only ergonomic issues but also issues of status. In some offices armrests are a symbol of importance – for example only the directors will get a chair with armrests or only managers – you get the point though, only the higher up in the company get swivel chairs with armrests.

Don’t fall in to this trap though, armrests are not reflection upon your standing in society and your choice to get a chair with or without armrests should be determined by the budget you have and not social pressures. If you have an open ended budget then I would recommend you to get a chair with armrests, if your budget is constrained though don’t bother with them – you’ll end up paying money for a cheap chair that has non adjustable armrests and this would be a big mistake.

Using a chair where the armrests do not adjust will actually cause more harm than good for your comfort. Unless you are the typically proportioned person you will find that the armrests are in the wrong position for you and consequently they will get in your way and restrict your movement. If you are going to get a chair with armrests make sure that you get one with armrests that can have their height and width adjusted so that you can set it up to your requirements.
