Many fans of the animated Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender have eagerly been awaiting the release of Avatar The Last Airbender Soundtrack. Indeed, some fans are so enthusiastic about the music in the series that they created online petitions to try to get Nickelodeon to release it to the public. Whether or not such efforts have had any effect, it looks as if Nickelodeon is finally going to grant their wish. Although bootleg forms of much of the music from Avatar have been available as torrents and mp3’s for some time, an official version of the music for the series is expected to be released soon.

Heavily influenced by martial arts as well as Asian art and mythology, Avatar: The Last Airbender is considered a groundbreaking series of epic proportion, blending action, drama, and comedy presented in an animation style that borrowed from both Asian anime and U.S. domestic cartoons. Airing from February 2005 to July of 2008, the series is still a popular buy on DVD and from iTunes, Xbox Live Marketplace, and other sources, attesting to its lasting appeal. Viewers and critics alike lauded the show, garnering some of Nickelodeon’s highest ratings as well as being nominated for and winning Peabody Awards, Genesis Awards, and Annie Awards.

The music of the series, created by Jeremy Zuckerman and Benjamin Wynn, combines moving themes and ethnic Asian musical elements, including the use of Japanese taiko drums, which help create the foundation for many of Avatar's action sequences. Zuckerman actually studied traditional Chinese instruments with a master Chinese musician in order to help produce more authentic sounding compositions that complement the ancient and mythological feel of the series. The team of Zuckerman and Wynn were able to create music that borrows from specific East Asian traditions without sounding specific to any one culture. The complexity of the Avatar storyline required many different musical themes and emotional nuances to match the series’ many narratives and dramatic situations, resulting in a richly varied, dynamic, and beautifully melodic musical score. Traditional sounds are blended with modern synthesizer and sampling technologies to help produce a wide variety of orchestrations that vary from ethereal and angelic to rhythmic and hard-driving.

The ongoing appeal of Avatar: The Last Airbender and the fact that unofficial versions of the music from the series remain popular among the online file-sharing crowd suggests that Avatar The Last Airbender Soundtrack will be a popular seller that is sure to satisfy eager fans, many of whom have waited years for an official soundtrack release.
