Pre-wash conditioner
Covering your hair with coconut oil and leaving it on as a treatment, either for a few hours or overnight, before washing can leave it super soft. In fact, coconut oil has been shown to be particularly impressive when used as a pre wash conditioner.
Why? Coconut oil is able to actually penetrate into the core of the hair, something that very few oils are able to do. This quality means that coconut oil is fantastic at preventing excess water absorption during washing - when hair absorbs water it swells, leaving the outer cuticle ragged, rough and prone to damage during wet combing. Pre-treating with coconut oil has been proven to help reduce damage during wet combing by coating and penetrating the hair, protecting it and preventing excess moisture loss.
Pre-dye treatment
The same qualities that make coconut oil so fantastic at protecting hair during washing have been tested out by using it to treat the hair before it's dyed. There are plenty of reports that applying coconut oil to the hair and leaving it to soak in the night before dying it helps to protect the hair during the chemical dye process, leaving it softer and in much better condition that without the treatment. This sounds well worth a try if you're a serial dyer, though it makes sense to be a little wary in case the application of coconut oil affects the final results of the hair dye.
Using coconut oil to style hair
Not only is it great for conditioning, coconut oil can be a brilliant styling product. You won't want to use much, as it'd easy to end up looking like an oil slick if you go overboard, but a subtle slick of coconut oil to the ends of your hair can really help to define curls and combat frizz.
