Hi there! I'm Trudy and I run a site called Cloudy Dreams where I design, paint and then scan cards and put them online so others can download them and print them for free. I'm a passionate believer in the beauty and importance of handmade. Handmade birthday cards is something that is not only a wonderful thing to receive but something that can make you feel so proud to have created with your own two hands.
Your recipient will feel blessed that you have taken the effort to make them something with them specifically in mind. Hand making gifts and cards also gives you the chance to customize them and show the recipient just how much you know them and care about who they are. You can tailor it so that it reflects their personality, interests or even a shared joke that no-one else would get.
For those who have always wanted to create handmade birthday cards but have never known where to start I am going to run through a few quick steps to create that perfect card to show your loved one just how much you care!
Step 1. Collect your materials
You are going to need a few things before you begin. Most importantly is a blank card or some cardboard you can fold into a card shape, other items that you could use include:
glitter
colored tape
photos of you and the Birthday boy or girl
stickers
colored cardboard
glue
Step 2. Start Designing
Once you have gathered your materials review what's in front of you. Choose a few items that you think reflect the recipient. What is their favorite color? Do they have a favorite photo of you together or is there a photo from a trip you took together or a special party? Do they love glitter or think it's tacky?
With the materials that you think will reflect the recipient start designing your card. Don't glue anything on until you have laid out your design. If you are unsure where to start I think it's always good to start with the photo. You could cut out a square of colored cardboard just larger than the photo and lay it underneath as a border. What about then adding another border of glitter? Don't forget to keep everything balanced and not too top or bottom heavy.
Step 3. The Fun Part!
Now here comes the good bit in making handmade birthday cards! Slowly and one at a time glue down the pieces you have chosen. If it's looking a bit empty you can always add a sticker in the corners or just in the top right hand corner.
Take a step back. Looking good? Good!
The birthday boy or girl is going to love the time you have taken to make them such a special card, this applies to all ages! Don't forget to write a special message inside telling them exactly why they are so special to you.
