It was the time of Steve Urkel and keeping up with the cool kids on Saved By The Bell (Zack + Kelly=Forever). We loved pogs, slap bracelets and doing The Macarena. On the big screen we had teen movies about love at a tender age and the crazy things we go through to get there, so grab a Surge and read on:
Clueless (1995) - Haven’t seen this? As if! This cult classic starring Alicia Silverstone plays a rich blonde teen living on Daddy’s money looking for fun. Great one liners to be had and fun fact: A young Paul Rudd plays Silverstone’s step brother ‘Josh’.
10 Things I hate about you (1999)-Based on Shakespeare’s “Taming the Shrew’ starring a very young and new to the scene Heath Ledger and with a talented supporting cast Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon Levitt. A great movie that still holds it’s own in best teen movies of all time category.
American Pie (1999) - Perhaps the most controversial teen movie of this time period is based around an apple pie and a boy experimenting. Attend a Happy Hour and if you hold your breath and listen closely you can still hear Stiffler’s crude comments. Word of advice: skip the sequels.
Empire Records (1995) - Rex Manning is so sexy! Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger star is this teen angst movie about record store employees trying to save their store from corporate giants. Lots of good music and excellent clothing options. This was however one of the less popular teen movies of its time.
Varsity Blues (1999) - James Van Der Beek in his prime and with no Dawson’s Creek to back him up in this football movie. A group of small town kids looking for the bigger purpose in life because just like The Beek said ‘I don’t want your life.’
Never Been Kissed (1999) - Drew Barrymore is oh so cute in this hot for teacher teen movies. A rom-com about an undercover reporter in high school falls for her teacher. David Arqeutte plays her quirky and cool sidekick/brother who gets her nominated for homecoming queen and you guessed it, she’s never been kissed. As teen movies go, this was one of my favorites.
Dazed and Confused (1993) - This movie takes place in a small Texas town during the mid-70’s and like it’s title the kids at the local high school are ready to break free for the summer. Matthew Mcconaughey brings many laughs as the older student that never leaves the high school scene because he is just “L-I-V-I-N”.
