A caliper used in the workshop for doing micro measurements consists of two jaws one of which is fixed and the other slides. You get the jaw to slide by pushing you thumb against the knob located on the bottom of the readout. To get the greatest level of precision you will want to get a digital caliper.
With this caliper you can get your readings in either inches or millimetres, depending on your preference. Not all calipers have this option with some of them manufactured solely as metric instruments.
There are four reading that you can take with a caliper. They are outside, inside, depth and step and it doesn’t matter whether you have a vernier caliper, a dial caliper or an electronic digital caliper, they all provide these measurements.
Outside measurements are the most common and are taken by placing the large bottom jaws around the outside of an object, closing them either side until they both touch the object giving you a reading. Inside measurements are taken from the jaws on top of the caliper and these jaws are placed inside the space, opening them until they touch the inside walls giving you a reading.
A depth blade sits inside the handle of the caliper and it is used by sliding it out until it touches the bottom of the hole or depression that is being measured. It is necessary to carefully keep the caliper straight to get an accurate depth measurement. A step measurement can be taken by placing the sliding jaw on the upper step of the object and then opening the caliper until the fixed jaw touches the lower step giving you a reading.
There are many uses for a caliper in the workshop, particularly if it is essential to know the precise distance between two points on the work piece.
