There are three types of enclosures for walk in showers. A standard walk in shower enclosure is certainly the one familiar to most Americans: a stall mounted from a low ledge or directly from the floor, rather than integrated with the bathtub. Unlike standard enclosures, which usually have doors, doorless shower enclosures have a panel adjacent to at least one wall, and possibly a curtain. The third type, a wet room, is the most unique design, since it's almost a misnomer to call it an enclosure. Wet rooms are bathroom designs with no curtains, frames or doors to separate the shower from the rest of the bathroom.
The growing trend to omit as many partitions as possible, while chic, can be impractical when it comes to water containment. Many homeowners who convert their enclosures into a wet room or doorless solution wind up adding curtains or doors after a few months of constantly wiping their bathroom floors. The whole point of these designs was to give the bathroom a more spacious look. Fortunately, there's a fantastic solution to provide visual openness also providing water containment: shower screens.
A shower screen is a sheet of glass that usually spans about half the length of a rectangular enclosure. Since they're typically made of clear tempered glass, they preserve the illusion of a doorless enclosure. These screens can be mounted on stationary fixtures or hinges. While hinges are often used in frameless shower screens, the users enters the enclosure by walking through the open half rather than swinging the screen open. For small shower enclosures, however, hinge-mounted screens are often substitutes for doors; and the are meant to be swung open. Wet room screens are typically mounted with a pair of brackets or hinges screwed into the wall, with no support from the bottom.
Frameless shower screens are popular replacement for shower doors and curtains for two reasons. Visually, they're quite striking, since they're suspended entirely from one wall and seem to float a half-inch above the floor or ledge. This "floating" impression is reinforced by their lack of fixtures on at least two sides (usually the top of left edges of the glass).
They're also much Easier to quicker to clean than doors and curtains. There are no railings to capture mold, dirt, and hard water deposits in hard-to-reach crevices, and there is no none of the fussy handling required of shower curtains. The one slight drawback of frameless screens is the gap at the bottom between the edge of the glass and ledge. The amount of shower spray that might get through is usually not worth worrying about, but if water containment is a higher priority, consider a semi-frameless screen with a continuous hinge that runs along the bottom.
