Some folks think that any old fireplace tool will do when tending to their fires. Others believe that the well-appointed fireplace just isn't complete without a gleaming legion of matching of fireplace tools.

Three things need to be considered regarding fireplace tools. First, where the fireplace is located in the house? Second, what the purpose of the fireplace? Third, how large is the fireplace and fire to be?

Where the fireplace is located will have a lot to do with the tool's style. A living room fireplace is located where others will see it. A nicer set of fireplace tools are needed. The tools will want to compliment the fireplace screen; if the screen is of shiny brass, the tools should be brass as well. A poker, broom, and fireplace shovel is usually all that's necessary. A small fireplace, such as in a bedroom, calls for a nice poker and fireplace broom. A room dedicated to having fun, such as a den, can use any odd fireplace tool.

The purpose of the fire has to do with the function of the tools. If you use the fireplace to cook, you will want tools to make the cooking easier. A metal, swinging arm attached to the fireplace to hold cast iron pots or kettles is very useful. A grate to hold pans out of the wood, and a long fork and spoon are needed.

The size of a fire dictates the choice of tools as well. If large logs are used, a strong set of log tongs is essential for safety. A big, heavy poker would also be needed to shift burning logs.

The internet will have hundreds of nice fireplace tool sets to browse. Don't ignore thrift shops and garage sales when looking for odd tools to round out your set, though. Clean them up when you bring them home, and you'll have nice tools for pennies on the dollar.
