Diamond drill bits are used to cut precise holes in hard yet brittle materials like glass, limestone, marble, and slate. Its most common application in glass is when it is used to drill into glass jars or stained glass. A diamond drill bit, or diamond core drill bits, are ideal for their use on newer materials as well, such as ceramic tiles or new types of stained glass.
The way these drills work is: they create a hole the diameter of the drill bit, which is mounted inside a hollow cylinder to ensure precision and delicate drilling ability. The size of the drill bits range from anywhere between 5/64th of an inch to 4 inches. The size of the shaft though, always comes at a standard 3/8th of an inch, to ensure compatibility with the drill bits.
The drill bits' customization isn't limited to size only, as there are many different types of bits specially designed for different types of drilling. A special type of diamond drill bit, made for particularly delicate materials such as glass or tile, is a blunt diamond drill bit, aptly named so for the blunt industrial diamond surface at its end. Though they function at a slower rate than a diamond core drill bit, it ensures precision and safety because of how strong the material used is. Working with diamond drill bits requires great care, as the hand of the user should be steady to avoid making uneven holes.
Because of how powerful the diamond drill bits are, the pressure should be kept low or otherwise risk damaging and cracking the material or the drill bit itself.
