Not everything you can do to decorate your home has to involve going out and buying new merchandise. Many people are choosing to go with a more vintage look in their home decor. One great way to achieve an antique look is to add a collection of old, classic books to your shelves.  For many people, the old books are the focus, the lovely decor is just a bonus.

Collecting these old antiques does not have to cost very much money. Taking some time to make a few weekend visits to garage sales or estate sales will show you that there are still plenty of old books in circulation, and many of them are in pretty good shape. A wonderful bonus to building up a collection of old books for your home is that you might just find a few classics that can be re-sold on sites like eBay for a substantial profit.

You can usually pick up older books for a dollar or two, sometimes less, if you frequent estate clearances. It may be tempting to buy up every old volume you see if you come across a bunch of them with copyright dates in the early 1900's. Although there is certainly nothing wrong with grabbing such books for your own collection, you should not assume that a book being very old will guarantee that it is valuable. There were many books written and published which are considered pulp fiction. These may hold some value, but they most likely won't bring you any extraordinary returns. By the same token, finding more recent books which were penned by notable authors in their early years could bring hundreds of dollars.

Vintage books display well in a room that serves as a study or a home library. Placed carefully on a rustic set of bookshelves, they can add an air of sophistication to a room. Accented on each end with antique bookends, they are a very low cost way to decorate. If you actually enjoy reading some of the classic works you find, all the better!
