Cricut Cake Cutting Mats are designed exclusively for the Cricut Cake Machine. This new machine, inspired by scrapbooking enthusiasts, has truly made the art of cake decorating “a piece of cake”. The cutting mats are made of a resilient vinyl material, much like the flexible cutting boards and wipe-down pastry sheets that are on the market today. They currently come in two sizes, a 12x12 inch square, and a 12x24 inch rectangle for longer designs. Each mat has a ruler that runs around the border of the mat, designated in inches and centimeters, as well as a background grid in one inch squares. On top of the grid are eleven bold, concentric circles which measure diameter of the cake. This is helpful to gauge the size of your pattern. The larger rectangular mat, 12x24, has two sets of concentric circles on it, so basically it is like having two 12x12 mats fused together.
So now that you know all about the Cricut Cake Cutting Mats themselves, what do you do with them? The answer is gum paste. Gum paste is a sugar based dough that has a gum stiffening agent in it. Most three dimensional flowers and designs of the like are made with this type of piping agent. Gum paste can be bought premixed in buckets or as a dry mix. You can even make your own. This can also be made into a variety of vibrant colors. The gum paste is rolled into sheets and affixed on top of the cake cutting mat. The mat is then placed into the machine and out pops your design, ready to be transferred to your cake.
