Short of hiring a professional, there are many successful ways to kill termites in your yard or house.
While all termite products may not need professional equipment for their application, careful attention should be paid to user protection when applying any chemical or pesticide.

Granules are an easy way to kill termites. They are sold under several brand names. They require no mixing or equipment, and are safe to use. Broadcasting, or spreading the granules in the general area of termites, will lead to the workers foraging through the granules, and becoming poisoned.

They do not attract termites, nor have much affect on termites that are not in the area at the time of spreading the granules. Moisture in the soil activates the granules.

Dust, or dusting for termites, is a good way to kill termites you can see, and termites you can't see. Most dusts can be applied with inexpensive equipment. Dust can be blown into crevices, and spread around crawl spaces and foundation walls. They usually have a residual killing time of a little less than a year. Most resist moisture and work effectively. To be safe, you would have to treat your house about every eight months. They are not for treating foundations in new construction.

Aerosols are used for termites you can see coming out of the ground, or nests, or contaminated wood. The spray will kill on contact. Most have some residual strength of a few to eight weeks.

Another type of aerosol is foam treatment. The spray turns into a foam, and can penetrate deep into walls and crevasses. As you spray the foam, it expands to many times its original size. The foam kills on contact, and usually has a residual life of eight weeks or more.

Termite insecticides are an effective way of killing and protecting against termites. They are usually sold by the gallon, and require mixing, and some equipment.

They come in repellent and non-repellent form. A non-repellent will allow the termites to come in contact, and then they are killed. They can have a lifetime of forty or more years.

A repellent insecticide sets up a barrier termites cannot cross without dying. If a gap is left, or opened up in the perimeter, termites can cross unharmed.

If termites are detected living under a concrete slab, holes will need to be drilled at intervals, and a long term treatment should be injected.

Termite baits are another popular way of killing termites. If you think you have termites, but don't know where
they are, you can lure them to a bait station. They consist of small containers containing wood or cellulose.
When termites are detected in the container the bait is switched to the actual poison that will kill the termites.

There is no assurance that you have totally destroyed the colony, so numerous termite stations, and a period of time without any activity, may be needed to indicate the termites are no longer active or alive.

Any product used by the homeowner will need to be researched carefully to protect themselves, and pets, from being accidentally harmed.
