The type of mirrored furniture we have today is said to have existed around as early as the 12th Century. Tracing back its evolution, we will see how different it was from today’s modern furniture. It is amazing to note that while men gradually develop his intellectual abilities, his creations as well have evolved to be even more beneficial to him.

Back then, there were no variations of mirrors. The history of mirrors would tell you that they have been used both as items for decoration and for image reflection purposes.  The first mirrors were simply hand mirrors that reflected one’s image. It is usually made of silver and sometimes polished with bronze or gold.

When Renaissance came, the production of glass mirrors with metal or steel support backings sprouted and faced out the simple hand mirrors.

Then as times moved, various innovations were added to the old metal framed mirrors. The first to experiment with different styles of combining mirrors with furniture was the Venetians. They incorporated mirrors with various pieces of furniture like dressers, cabinets, even in tables and chairs. Hence, this gave way to the birth of the modern mirror furniture we have today. Each step of making the glass furniture is handcrafted with thorough care and attention. The glass passes through various stages with the use of special tools to cut and polish the designs. The Venice Glass Industry wanted to keep the secret of making the glass furniture. However, as mirror workers moved to different places the idea slipped and spread over the world.

Then by the fall of the 17th Century, furniture makers started to make printings and carvings on mirrors with different patterns. This is also period when other countries started producing mirrors. This further led to the Frenchmen’s introduction of the cheval glass, a long mirror mounted on swivels in a frame.

At present, men are continuing to create innovations of mirror and furniture production. They are not only limited now to the traditional usage for image reflection but even as decorative items that promote elegance and magnificence in your homes and even in famous public spots. The modern mirrored furniture have had truly made a long way from the hand mirror it once were.
