Different Types of 3D Scanners

As the cost of 3D scanners lowers, the number of applications continue to increase. Previously the bastion of manufacturing, the 3D scanner is now finding a home in more and more diverse work settings where it is increasing accuracy as it blazes a trail. Just a few of the advantages include better resolution as well as portability.

Two of the primary uses of 3D modeling include pattern recognition and providing a way to create a physical model. Other uses are the ability to update outdated CAD models, help design a product to suit someone else's part, it can help to replace an old or missing part, and it can provide a more accurate perspective on complex shapes or parts. In order to create an accurate image, the 3D scanner functions on a triangulation theory. There is a triangle formed between the object, the scanner lens and the laser. Once all the scans are taken, the data is merged based on a point of alignment.

There are factors which should be considered before a purchase of a 3D scanner. The first is the ability to conduct long-range scans. A good scanner will have exceptional accuracy for distances of up to 75 meters.

Resolution for these scanners are generally addressed by three measurements. The first is the width of the laser stripe. The second is the CCD resolution and the final measurement is the focal length of the lens. All of these combine together to create an accurate picture.

3D scanners are a wonderful tool when reverse engineering is required. If you have an object which you wish to dissect, reverse engineering will allow a picture to be taken without disturbing the object in any way. This non-invasive method of investigation can be a wonderful way to get more information.
