Running shoe companies tend to divide their range of shoes into three broad categories based on the level of support and cushioning they provide. The categories describe the amount of motion control that has been built into the shoes and can be used as a guide when deciding which shoe to buy. The three broad categories are Maximum Stability, Stability and Cushioning.

Here is a brief breakdown of the various shoes found in each category and the type of runner being catered for.

Most runners fall into the stability category with these shoes catering for mild overpronation while also providing cushioning support. The shoes in this category are largely lightweight trainers that you might also use as racing shoes. Runners who are biomechanically efficient will buy shoes from this category and would be looking at shoes such as: Asics Gel Kayano, Adidas Supernova Sequence, Nike Zoom Elite+.

A small proportion of runners have a problem with sever overpronation and require shoes that give them maximum stability. The exaggerated rolling of the foot can place a lot of stress on the body if left untreated and the added support provided by shoes in this category helps. Shoes available providing maximum stability include: New Balance 587, Nike Zoom Nucleus MC+, Asics Gel Evolution.

The opposite problem to overpronation is underpronation and this means the foot hits the ground with very little or none of the rolling movement that absorbs the shock of impact. To compensate, the shoes in the cushioning category provide the added padding that these runners lack. Shoes to look for include: Nike Air Pegasus+, New Balance 1064, Asics Gel Kushon, Mizuno Creation.

Comfort is a very important factor when wearing running shoes and no matter which category you fall into, as long as the shoe feels comfortable when you're running you should continue to run pain free.
