Skin Asthma is also known as atopic dermatitis. It is a chronic disease that is triggered by allergens. It is characterized by mild to severe itching of the skin. These are often scaly red patches and the size may vary. Common irritants include dust, perfumes, weather, environment, detergents, smoke and chemicals.
Atopic Dermatitis can appear in any party of the body. It commonly occurs on the elbows, face and neck. Skin asthma may cause discomfort like itching. Scratching the affected area may worsen it, so anti-itch medications are prescribed.
Taking vitamins can also be a form of prevention, since skin asthma is an autoimmune disease. Having a healthy body might prevent it from recurring frequently and it can make the immune system stronger.
Moisturizing the skin is also another key for preventing it from flaring up. In addition, over-bathing may cause skin asthma, it may wash away the natural moisture of the skin, which may lead to dryness.
You can also control the itchiness by using a cold compress. Also avoid wearing tight fitting clothes. If possible, use cotton not synthetic fibers. Wash your hands before touching your skin as our hands touch many things and it may cause contamination or irritation.
Limit exposing yourself to allergens like perfumes, dust or even food that might trigger it. Exercise and avoiding stress may also prevent skin asthma. Also while taking a bath, avoid using hot water, warm would be fine. Most of all practice good hygiene. That's the cheapest and the best thing you can do to avoid triggers. Take note that skin asthma isn't contagious. It cannot be passed even with skin contact.
Antihistamines and corticosteroids are some of the common drugs used to cure skin asthma. They come in oral or topical forms. Skin sensitivity may vary, so it's best to ask the experts.
