The popularity of ATVs apparently bloomed late last year. And so here is a quick guide that presents a short yet comprehensive introduction of the particulars, use and classification of ATVs.

All-Terrain Vehicle or ATV is a three-wheeler or four-wheeler bike that is designed to traverse a wide variety of terrain. Its low pressure tires can withstand abuse making this vehicle suitable for racing and crossing muddy, rocky, and root covered terrains. And just as men go crazy over bikes and motor sports, young boys seem to appreciate the same interest. Quad bikes became an instant hit to children who love to get down and dirty. Manufacturers responded to the kids’ interest in playing with toys for big boys and so they introduced a smaller version of the quad bike to perfectly suit the capability of the younger generation. There are also road legal quad bikes that meet all the the legal requirements of a street vehicle and can be driven as your primary means of transportation.

Sometimes called as Kids ATV, Youth ATV, Micro ATV, and the more popular Junior ATV, a mini ATV is a smaller or mini version of the adult ATV. Special modifications have been made in order for the Mini ATV to look like the larger counterpart yet still maintain suitability for the age of the intended rider. A typical Mini ATV has the components of a full-sized bike such as the tranny, frame, and motor; but these components are tailored to be appropriate with the age of the driver.

Mini ATVs are available in different styles but models vary according to the type of motor appropriate for a certain age group. For riders aged 6 to 12 years old, there is the 50cc ATV. Most 50cc ATVs are equipped with electric start to ensure safety. A speed restrictor is also incorporated to assist kids who are still learning how to ride a quad. Riders between 12 to 16 years of age can traverse using a 110cc quad bike while those who are over 16 years old can drive an ATV with motor over 90cc.

There are just a few notable differences between an adult ATV and a mini ATV. Most mini ATVs have a 2-3 speed automatic transmission similar to some models of Adult ATV. Although latest models have been upgraded with discs all around, mini ATVs typically have drum brakes all around or drums out front and single disc on rear axle. Mini versions also feature 2 to 4 inches suspension travel. It appears that Youth ATVs provide a bouncier ride than an adult quad bike as most youth versions utilize just a single A-arm set-up compared to the double A-arm feature of full-sized bikes. Junior ATVs are also equipped with headlights so it would look more like the adult quad version. But although these features are fully functional, be extra careful in allowing younger kids to go night riding.
