A big thing now on the Internet are clubs that are forming and buying freshed pressed olive oil in bulk. Then the members get together and split the oil up. There are even Gourmet olive oil tasting parties scheduled over the 'Net. You can find Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Clubs online. You can join and obtain information from them as well.
Don't think you have to spend a fortune on an oil to get good quality. One brand I use, Star Special Reserve olive oil, is budget prices but is of very good quality.
The Greeks and Italians may not have directly known that Extra Virgin olive oil was better for them, but I think many of the older ones had a clue. Today, modern medicine and studies are still discovering the many benefits of fresh pressed extra virgin olive oil over lesser grades.
When looking over olive oil to buy, choose wisely. While most olive oil will have some benefits, the higher quality, freshly pressed extra virgin, first cold pressed oils will contain the most punch for the dollar spent. Plus, it just darn well taste better than lesser oils! It's would also be wise to look for a use by date on your oil. This will ensure that you are getting the freshest oil available.
It isn't hard to find good quality olive oil in your market. You may have to shop around at several different stores, but the benefits far outweigh the time it takes to find it. Strangely enough, I found the Star Olive Oil mentioned above at Wal-Mart! Generally though, I find the better oils at specialty stores or I order them online. Either way, you'll get some high quality oil that is good for you.
