One of the most common ailments for dogs to suffer are ear infections. However, you might not notice there is an issue until it becomes a painful problem effecting your dog.
How to Detect Ear Infections
Is your dog shaking its head a lot? Is your pet rubbing its ears with its paws, on the furniture, on the carpet, or on your leg? Is your dog a little too happy to have you scratch its ears? Perhaps your pet used to love having its ears scratch but now moves away when you reach for its ears? All of these behaviors are symptoms of a dog ear infection.

This means that this dirt-like substance is probably ear wax buildup, and this buildup is probably causing the mysterious odor radiating from your pet.
Why Your Dog Gets Ear Infections
Excess smelly ear wax is caused in most cases by inflamed (or infected) wax glands (ceruminous glands) in your beloved dog's ears. If these glands become infected, then they discharge excess ear wax, which at first causes your dog ear's to itch, which is why your pet keeps rubbing its ears on everything and constantly begs for ear scratching. If you do not spot the problem fairly soon, the wax buildup causes your dog a lot of pain and will no longer want you to scratch its ears and will become listless and lay around because of the pain.
