Many people are looking for different ways to spruce up the boring wooden boxes that they call cabinets, and crown molding is one of the most popular ways to do so.  Putting crown molding on cabinets isn't a tough job, but there are a few different ways to do it.  In this post I want to share the two common installations, and a creative one that you might not have thought of.

The two common installations are similar, but different in the aspect that one has the cabinets butting up with the ceiling and the other doesn't.  When you cabinets meet up with the ceiling you can install crown molding like you would in any other room in the house.  It may take molding that is thinner, or faux crown molding that is cut to size because the cabinet doors are in the way.

When the cabinets don't meet the ceiling you have the opportunity to create a "crown" on the top of the cabinet.  This is a really cool technique that gives your cabinets a very royal feel.  Installing crown molding this way is a more difficult job since the height of the cabinets has to be increased to accommodate the molding.  To do this, an elevated shelf is made on top of the cabinet to meet the height of the molding.

A creative use for cabinet crown molding is to install it below the lip of the counter top.  It takes thin molding to do this, and maybe even custom cut molding, which is surprisingly affordable.  It creates a smooth effect from the cabinet up to the counter top.  Many people will paint the molding to match the counter which gives the counter's edge a round feel.

Installing crown molding on cabinets can usually be done by the DIY homeowner, but it takes some advanced wood working skill to finish the project when the cabinets don't meet the ceiling.  There aren't many projects like this that will make as big of an impact with as little work!
