Many young families struggle to find balance in their lives when it comes to weighing the needs of their young family with their own needs for physical fitness. If cycling is your exercise of choice, then you have options when it comes to including your children in your activity. Rather than leaving them at childcare, you can include them in your exercise routine and make your workout a family outing. This is a great way to ensure active and healthy kids in the future. A child bike seat provides a secure mount for your child to sit in and go along for the ride.
There are a number of different models of bike seats out there on the market but they all function fairly similarly. Basically a seat will mount either to a rack behind you or in some cases on the bar in front of you. These seats are designed to support your child's body and head and is equipped with straps to keep them securely mounted into the seat.
The upside of this arrangement is that your child is mounted on the bicycle along with you and you can communicate with them as the ride progresses. The downside is that some riders report a certain uneasiness with the extra weight mounted on the bicycle and they don't feel as secure as they do when riding alone. The other issue to be aware of is that if you have two or more children then someone gets left out with this arrangement.
Another alternative is a bicycle trailer that you tow behind you. These bike trailers can house 2 and sometimes as many as 3 children and still keep the child safe and secure without the added weight on the bicycle itself. The downside of course, is that you lose the ability to communicate with your child easily when they are in the trailer.
