For anyone wanting to accommodate guests in their home, you have quite a few choices. You can set up a room as; a dedicated guest room, a room that converts to a guest room, say with a Murphy bed, or, less expensive options include buying a convertible sofa and probably cheapest of all is the ubiquitous air mattress. Air mattresses, have certainly improved quite a bit in recent years and with a price range of $30-$200, on average, there is surely an air mattress to fit anyone’s budget. Here are some things to think about when shopping for an air mattress.
The first thing you need to consider, when looking for an inflatable bed, is ease-of-use. This relates to things like how easy it is to inflate/deflate, how easy it is to get in and out. For example, better beds are likely to have a built-in pump for inflation and a large removable plug for deflation. Other beds however require you to use a hair dryer on its cool setting. As for getting in and out, the stiffer the side walls of the bed, the easier it will be to get in and out of the bed. Similarly, models come in heights that range from just a few inches off the floor, to the same height as a regular bed. Napping, a velvet texture applied to the mattress, will help ensure that sheets don’t slide off the bed. Finally, many of the better beds, come with an inflatable headrest, which is useful for keeping your pillows from falling off the bed.
Another consideration is the size and weight of the bed. This is especially important, if you’ll be doing any traveling, and will be bringing the bed with you —- say if you’re camping. Larger beds, those with an elevated sleeping height, which might seem compact in the home, are simply impractical when traveling.
When I was a kid, and would go camping, my family would often sleep on the same air mattresses that we floated around the lake on and I can tell you from experience that the sleep quality was terrible. In contrast, today’s inflatable mattresses, have a sleep quality that rivals a regular bed. Even the cheapest models, are a huge step up from the poolside toys and because of their compactness, they are an ideal solution for guest accommodations in any small home, or apartment, and especially on a tight budget.
