LED TVs and plasma rival each other when it comes to clarity of picture and brightness of color. They are both thinner in terms of depth of the flat screen casing which is about 1.5 to 4 inches. They can both be produced in large screen size displays and compete in price range. However, the technology behind them is different.

LED TVs are LCD TVs that use LEDs to illuminate the display. Full HD LCD TVs are made up of two sheets of glass with liquid-crystal-filled cells sandwiched between them. A matrix of thin film transistors (TFTs) supplies voltage to the liquid crystals. LED TVs use light emitting diodes to illuminate the crystal display unlike the traditional LCDs that use fluorescent lights to illuminate the display. The LEDs are placed either around the edge of the display or to the rear of the panel.

LED TV technology differ from plasma technology which consist of many individual pixel cells through which electric pulses are passed to heat up gases in the cells (these gasses are typically xenon and neon) resulting in them to glowing and producing light. The light from the gases lights the correct levels of green, red and blue phosphors for each cell to produce the correct levels of colors. Each pixel cell receives instruction from software contained in the televisions control unit to produce the required images on screen.

LED TVs and plasma TVs have the ability to produce true blacks. However, the LED TV switches off particular LEDs and the plasma TVs uses internal algorithms to prevent power to particular pixels in order to make a pixel black. When the plasma TVs have to make white color, they are known to make an audible buzzing sound because of the high power used.

With the ability of the LED TVs to make true blacks as opposed to the traditional LCD TVs it can be argued that LED TVs and plasma TVs are now producing a similar quality of picture though the LED TV is cheaper than plasma TVs to produce.
