Solar panels convert the active power of the sun into solar energy to be used in homes, on boats and for other things which we need power for. The cells of a solar panel, known as photovoltaic or solar cells, are usually constructed in grid like patterns at the surface of the panel. From this surface area photovoltaic cells collect the sunlight during the day and converts it into electricity.
Solar cells are typically constructed with gallium arsenide and crystalline silicon. The silicon is the same material which is used in computer processors and other types of devices. Gallium arsenide is an expensive material which has the only purpose of being used in solar panels. The more efficient panels are usually constructed by using another material known as amorphous silicon alloy. The cells produced in this manner are known as amorphous silicon cells or A-si. These cells are not only just more efficient but are also much thinner than standard cells.
There are some important projects which are concerned with solar panels. Certain space probes require solar energy to work and are built using a process called molecular beam epitaxy. Molecular beam epitaxy uses gallium arsenide in the construction of solar cells to make more efficient use of the light spectrum produced by our sun. These panels are much more efficient than the standard types yet are much more expensive due to the added materials which are used in their construction. Recent solar panels actually function on a molecular or quantum level which is giving way for a new and exciting technology. These panels are created using quantum dots or 'nanotubes' which are built into a treated plastic. The costs of these solar panels are comparatively less.
In solar panels that we use at home their is a grid like system of photovoltaic cells. These cells act like lenses which help convert the power of the sun by absorbing the light spectrum it produces and converting it into solar energy. The amount of power produced by solar panels depends on a few factors. One of these factors depends on how many solar cells you are utilizing. The more surface area of solar cells, the more power will be produced.
The types of solar panels which are produced for home use are available in two different types. These two types of solar panels are rigid thin and flexible thin panels.
If you are interesting in a more eco-friendly homes than you should install a solar panel. They are quite expensive, with a low ROI on the investment, but they have many advantages. Eco friendly houses need to utilize this type of renewable energy source to help save our planet for our future generations and this is just one more step in the direction of lessening our dependence on fossil fuels. Solar panels are easy to install and once you have one for your home you will immediately see your electric bill diminish.
