Choose Travertine For The Walkway In Your Garden

The uses of travertine stone are varied because it can be applied to several areas of the home, both inside and out. If you are not aware of this useful construction and building material, then you are missing a great opportunity to achieve a very nice home. Travertine inside the home can be used for almost every surface area like floor of your entrance, bathrooms and the coverings of a shower stall. Normally, the color of the stone is a variation of earth tones since it is a sedimentary rock that formed at the bottom of hot springs millions of years ago and the mineral content of the rocks influence the unique look. Travertine patio pavers can work very well in a garden pathway because they are very durable and the shades have a very natural and earthly look. Most people fill in the surrounding areas of the pavers with crushed stone that complements its color but, for my own preference, I use tiny round river rocks which are available at local landscape suppliers.

In order to have a long lasting setup of travertine pavers in a garden walkway, it is necessary that your base is made of good material. If you live in area where there is lots of rain and snow, it is much better to use gravel as your base. Start doing your base material by marking a path and dig down 5” below the surface of your final paver level. Get rid of all loose dirt and vegetable matter and compact the area. You can use a post with an attached square of plywood for compacting.

After preparing the base area, begin with your drainage by adding a few inches of gravel and pack it with a tamper. Then, spread out the sand about an inch thick and completely level the area. Start the installation of one side of your border and lay down the pavers. You can keep them as close as possible if you want. After the pavers are laid down, you can start the installation of the second border.

Lastly, apply the material that will go in between. If your paving stones are closely fitted, you will be spreading the sand over the surface of the pavers and sweep it to and fro so the cracks are filled. If your pavers are set farther apart, do not use sand. Instead, use smaller stones like those I mentioned above.

You can also set travertine marble tiles in a bed of concrete but this doesn’t look as natural and it is very difficult to modify the walkway later.
