If you are going on a skiing trip, don't forget to bring one thing. And no, I'm not talking about the skis themselves. I'm talking about a decent skiing jacket! A lot of people who are going on their first skiing trip are going to buy a cheap twenty five dollar skiing jacket and they assume that this jacket will protect them from the cold adequately. This is either an overestimation of the cheap jacket's ability to keep you warm, or an underestimation of the severe cold that you will be exposing yourself to on your trip. Or a combination of both, of course.

For any decent skiing jacket, you will have to pay around the amount of fifty dollars per jacket. Fifty dollars is not something many people think lightly of, but on the other hand... it's far from being unaffordable. And if you want to get value for your money, then you must make sure to learn what features a good skiing jacket has and how they work to keep you warm. So how exactly do ski jackets work to protect the wearer from the nasty cold outside?

Skiing jackets often come with insulation. The insulation is a layer of material that will make sure that your body heat is not quickly being transferred from inside your jacket to outside your jacket. Because your body warmth is contained within, your body doesn't have to produce new warmth constantly. This is what it would be doing if it came in direct contact with cold air and you would quickly freeze. Jackets with insulation are the warmest you can get, but they also lack a little bit in the breathability department. If you want the possibility of cooling down when you are overheating, make sure your insulated jacket has underarm zippers that you can open up.

Speaking of zippers... these will need to have internal zipper guards. All of them. And all the seams in your jacket... they need to be taped or protected in any other way. This is to make sure your jacket is wind proof and water proof. Nothing will cool you down and make you freeze your socks off than cold wind and water getting inside your jacket.

So not only is it important that a skiing jacket keeps your body warmth in, it also needs to keep the outside cold out! And that, my friend, is how ski jackets work to protect you from the cold!

Now that you know thin jackets don't necessarily mean cold jackets... why not have a look at this snug fitting, flexible and very warm Discount Marmot Soft Shell Women's Ski Jacket?
