The Work of a “Loner”: The Oval Rug

A single pair of skilled hands can produce an oval rug in a period of time that does not seem like “an eternity.” In contrast, any center that produces hand woven large area rugs tends to use a team of workers, for production of a single floor covering. The length of time required for one person to make a large pile weave carpet is so great, that carpet manufacturers have found it necessary to reduce the length of that period, in order to insure the efficiency of their operations.

Since they can not make any pair of skilled hands work faster, those manufacturers have chosen to put a team of weavers at each loom. The loom contains the warp, the strands on which the bits of yarn need to be tied in small knots. Each knot goes around two different strands.

The act of tying a knot sounds simple enough, but the carpet maker must complete line after line of closely packed knots. Completion of such a work of art is a long and tedious process. In contrast, the maker of an oval floor covering often makes tufts. He or she pushes wool or acrylic yarn through a primary backing.

Sometimes, the maker of an oval rug creates a braided piece. The selected fabric is braided and then shaped into the desired geometric pattern. Both methods require less time than the time consuming and repetitious knotting of threads on a loom.

Still, those people who have learned how to carry out any of those rug making methods are true “craftsmen,” even though many of them are women. The top quality products that they turn out can never be copied by a machine. Sometimes they even add a touch of emotion to their creation, such as when they tie a “love knot” onto the backing of a carpet.
