When we say the most compact, it doesn’t necessarily mean the smallest. Compact means it is tightly packed or dense. So when we apply this terminology to printers, we will get various interpretations. It may be that printers are compact because they are heavier than they look. They may be compact because all their parts fit snugly inside, or they may be compact because they pack all features that make a good printer fit in one small package.
The world’s smallest printer, though not officially, is the PrintBrush which was developed by PrintDreams. It weighs just about 200gms and the size is 250cc. in terms of density, it has mass density of 0.8gm/cc. In terms of features, it only prints in monochrome at 600x600 dpi resolution. The printing speed may vary depending on how much you can brush the printer from side to side. However, in terms of volume, it can print at a maximum of 400mm/sec.
The PrintStik, which happens to be the smallest printer, weights around 1.5lbs and it has dimensions of 11” x 1” x 2”. If we are to calculate its density, that would be 1.89gm/cc. In terms of performance, it could do no more than 600dpi resolution a speed of 4pages per minute.
Then we have the MW120 from Brother. In terms of dimensions, it is thinner compared to the previous two. In appearance, it looks like a .7 inch thick notebook. Like the previous printers mentioned, it also prints in monochrome at 4 pages per minute. It has its own battery so you can use the printer even if you’re outside and don’t have a power adapter.
These compact printers for a laptop hardly have the features that you would want in an office or home printer. However, they offer some advantages that will be very appealing to those who need them.
Now that gone through the physical aspect, let’s go to the compactness of printers by compressing a lot of features inside a tiny package. There are a number that qualify by having this characteristic however for purposes of discussion, let us consider the printers from HP Officejet H470, Epson PictureMate and Canon Pixma iP100. All these printers also make good compact printers for laptops. So let’s go straight into the features.
For picture quality, Canon leads with a resolution of 9600 x 2400dpi, followed by the HP Officejet at 5760 x 1440dpi. In terms of connectivity features, HP and Canon are tied having both wireless interfaces, infrared and Bluetooth, along with USB interface. In terms of speed, HP Officejet leads at 22pages per minute followed closely by Canon’s at 20 PPM while the Epson PictureMate trails far behind at 1.6ppm. In terms of portability, HP and Canon is comparable to a size of a laptop while Epson looks like a lunchbox. HP and Canon is able to print in standard sized papers such as letter and legal. Unfortunately the Epson can only print on a maximum of 6”x4” papers. These features make good compact printers for a laptop.
