The fact is you can slow down and even stop your hair loss for a time if you use the remedies of hair loss that have proven effective in clinical trials. There are two remedies that have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration as being effective in the treatment of balding and hair thinning. Use of these drugs as been proven by scientific studies in the United States government to help with the restoration of hair lost due to male pattern baldness.
The first of these drugs, Finasteride, was originally developed as a treatment for male urinary tract problems, in particular enlarged prostate. During trials it was noticed that men with male pattern baldness had some relief from their symptoms. Further studies indicated the causes for enlarge prostate are linked to the cause of hair loss due to pattern baldness. The hormonal substance DHT is the culprit. Finasteride acts as a DHT blocker to limit the amount of the substance in the blood stream. Thus there is less to act on the prostate and also the hair follicles which are responsible for hair growth.
The second drug acts to protect the hair follicles from the hormone metabolite. The DHT naturally bonds with receptors on the hair follicles and slowly chokes off growth of the hair shaft material keratin. As this happens the hair shaft gets thinner in cross section diameter and eventually gets so weak that is breaks off and falls out. Minoxidil, this second drug, bonds at the receptor sites so the hormone can’t. This protects the follicle and allows it to continue to grow hair.
Either of these remedies for hair loss will help to treat pattern baldness but only the second one is approved for use by women. The first has the potential for birth defects. If you are serious about stopping the loss of hair then you should talk to your doctor or health care professional about these remedies.
