Cars can suffer from any number of mechanical problems but one of the most damaging is also one of the easiest to prevent. Low oil pressure is a serious problem for any vehicle. It can cause a lot of damage to the car's engine in a very short space of time but fortunately it is also very easy to remedy as long as you catch it early before any damage can be done.
There are several reasons why the oil pressure might fall. Over time the level of oil falls due to natural wastage, this is to be expected. This is also why you should monitor your oil level closely because it will fall even if you don't have any other problems in the engine.
Other reasons for low oil pressure include the removal of oil from the system because of obvious leaks, like the kind that leave behind a dirty oil stain on your driveway, or less obvious leaks suggest a slow drain from a leaking gasket. If you do have a leaking gasket a sure sign is a blueish tint to the smoke coming out of the exhaust when you start the car. This is a sign that the oil is seeping into the combustion chamber and is being burnt along with the air and gas.
But it might not be a problem with the oil escaping. If the oil pump is faulty pressure will fall and also the oil pressure gauge sender unit which is used to measure the flow of oil could be faulty this will result in the wrong reading been sent to the oil pressure gauge.
