If from time to time you could do with a cold can at your desk or a cool drink in your car, then a mini portable refrigerator may be the gadget for you. Portable mini refrigerators are super small in comparison to your standard fridge. Think of a standard fridge being a hundred litres capacity, a portable mini fridge can range in size from one litre through to six litres.
A fridge this small is only ideal in certain situations but can be a handy device to have. For ulimate portability at your desk you could go for a one litre usb mini fridge. These are generally only good enough for a single drinks can but can be a godsend in the summer heat. Whilst usb fridges are novel and not entirely useless, the standard portable mini refrigerator is more common and usually sized at between four and six litre capacity. The four litre is good to hold a six pack and the eight litre will comfortably hold an eight pack.
Most models of portable mini refrigerator won't produce any ice or have an ice compartment but this keeps running costs down, as an alternative feature many can actually keep a hot drink warm as they tend to have both cooling and heating modes. A decent portable should be able to keep cans 25 degrees below ambiant and heat to 55 above.
The majority of 4-6 litre portable mini fridges tend to be plastic cased in a variety of colors from red through to pink, blue and black, generally have a carry handle to the top and weigh in at circa 3-4 kgs. Most will come with a car cigarette socket adaptor and a mains plug for versatility, running costs are typically small with electrical consumption generally running at 30-60 watts an hour for the four and six litre models, which is about the same as a standard light bulb.
If you could use a cool drink on a hot day and think a portable mini refrigerator is ideal for you, then price wise, you won't be hit hard. Most models start from $30 and rise to about $60. There aren't any major brands associated with portable refrigerators, just a lot of manufacturers you probably haven't heard of, but don't let that put you off, the technology involved in this type of fridge isn't particularly complex so you'll find most basic machines are reliable and long lasting so long as they are not dropped or treated poorly.
