As the world gets more and more damaged by pollution, the waste of energy, and natural disasters, many species are beginning to die out. While some types of rare animals have been endangered for years, others are just beginning to emerge on the lists of endangered animals. Often times, freaky weird animals are the ones that are hunted, for they often have rare fur and meat that are desired by consumers. Others are not as strange, yet have still almost been destroyed by the human race.

One such specie is that of the Mediterranean Monk Seal. Living in the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea and other areas off the Northwest Coast of Africa, this seal is one of the most prevalent types of animals endangered. Sporting brownish-gray fur on their backs and lighter hair on their stomachs, these seals appear to be wearing the robes of a friar. Thus, they are called Monk Seals. These adorable mammals live in groups, much like humans do. Nevertheless, some of these groups have changed their living patterns due to their victimization. While Monk Seals are extroverted creatures by nature, many have taken to hiding in caves. It is assumed that this behavior stems from the fear of being hunted, which unfortunately effects many animals endangered.

Mediterranean Monk Seals eat a smorgasbord of seafood, ranging from fish to octopi. Although this diet can easily sustain a Monk Seal nutritionally speaking, the tainting of oceans with garbage and chemicals has left some seals suffering. For example, when toxic mercury is dumped into bodies of water, the fish become infected. When the Monk Seals eat the fish, consuming a large enough portion can cause mercury poisoning, which leads to brain damage and death. Even without mercury poisoning, Monk Seals have a hard enough time trying to survive. They almost became extinct in the 1800s, when their fur was so treasured they were nearly decimated as a species. Ever since, the group has been working to get back to a healthy population size. Fortunately, laws have been passed in several countries which outlaw the hunting of these seals. With any luck, these attempts to restrict their killing will hopefully revitalize Mediterranean Monk Seals as a non-endangered species.
