You might already own one or more pairs of stylish designer sunglasses, and think that they will be great for going out cycling if you live in a particularly hot and sunny part of the world. The problem with normal sunglasses is that they can be fragile, and may break quite easily if they fall off or get struck by something during your ride. Road cycling glasses are as much a piece of safety gear as they are a fashion statement. They tend to be built of more robust materials, much like other sports glasses. The lenses are made of tough polymers that can withstand significant impacts from stones, grit and even suicidal flying insects that make a beeline for your eyes when you are travelling at speed.
The other important thing to note about cycle glasses is the colors of the lenses that are available. You might see some pretty weird colors worn by professional cyclists, or serious competition riders in big tournaments such as the Tour de France. The color of the lenses is designed to give optimal vision during different conditions, as the weather and lighting can change significantly from one day to the next.
In very bright conditions, the lenses should be dark gray. These reduce glare and cut out most of the light. However, for more normal, sunny conditions, you still want to be able to see clearly, and so brown or amber lenses are a better option. They cut out glare and excessive light, but also improve contrast, so you will be able to see dangers on the road and avoid them.
For darker, more overcast conditions, a lighter shade would be more suitable, and so you will be able to find green and yellow lenses available for cycling glasses. The green ones are very good for improving contrast and depth perception in cloudy weather.
Many brands have research departments that are always trying to find better performance from their glasses and so there will be new colors on the market each year, designed to be better than last year's model. Red ones are fairly new and are good all-rounders.
Remember to buy road cycling glasses that have exchangeable lenses. That way you don't have to buy a whole sackful of glasses - just a single frame and a few colored lenses and you can quickly switch them according to the light conditions you find yourself riding in.
